The Adams class 415 Radial Tank engine was an unusual choice of locomotive for modellers, in that the prototypes were very much a regional favourite. It was also one of those unusual situations where two manufacturers, both Hornby and Oxford, set out to reproduce a model simultaneously, and when announced were too far along with their respective plans to abort the projects.
Duly, the Oxford model reached retail shops first in 2015, but were quickly followed on by the Hornby model.
Between the two firms competing for a small segment of the market, and the large number of models produced, they were likely not commercially successful for either firm, and as indicated by Hornby catalogues of the time, they languished in catalogues for a number of years in order to clear inventory.
R3398 was an attractive presentation train pack, introduced in 2016, as a limited edition, although featured in catalogues. Only 1,000 sets were produced, but they remained available for five years, through 2020. This set includes certificate 774 / 1,000.

The reality is that the model is a good representation of an unusual prototype. It's light weight might have been criticised, but yet it easily handled the two ex-LSWR coaches provided with the train pack, which represented a typical branchline train of the period.

The selected locomotive was the Adams 415 class radial tank engine in BR early crest lined livery, with running number 30583. The model was unique to the set, although a similar model of the same running number with late BR crests was available as a solo model. It too, sold poorly.
