Adding smoke oil through the chimney. Models that have Syncrosmoke were packaged with a miniature funnel to make the job of filling the oil reservoir a simple job. Often, the funnel is missing.

This shows the cover / lid in position. Note, that the deflector tube aligns with the smoke stack on the body moulding.

With everything being properly in place, and a few drops of oil, the locomotive will smoke, once the heating element warms up. This locomotive is being held in position with full power applied, in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the Syncrosmoke feature. The faster the model runs, the more smoke it emits.
