Finished as one of the fifteen of the Sunderland Mk.V deployed to support the British North Greenland Expedition (BNGE) of 1951-54. The BNGE was the largest state sponsored expedition in almost fifty years (dating back to Shackleton) and was the brainchild of Lieutenant-Commander C. J. W. (‘Jim’) Simpson, RN. In order to gain government approval in a time of austerity (wartime rationing was still in effect) the expedition’s stated purpose was threefold: scientific exploration of the remote North Greenland ice cap, training of British service members in an arctic environment, and finally the more nebulous ‘showing the flag’. The expedition itself teetered on the brink of disaster a couple of times; one member was killed, one aircraft was lost and two more had close shaves. The BNGE would not have been possible without the venerable Sunderlands of Coastal Command and their indefatigable crews.
